Crews were called for a possible apartment fire in the 600 block of Piper Ln. Multiple calls to 911 reported thick black smoke in the hallway. The first fire company arrived and found a commercial series clothes dryer on fire in the laundry room on the first floor. Crews extinguished the fire within 5 minutes. Crews then checked the rest of the building to confirm no residents were injured or sick. Smoke was ventilated out from all 3 floors of the apartment building. Prospect Heights firefighters were assited by a crew from the Wheeling fire department and an ambulance from Arlington Heights. The air teperature at the time of the call was minus 8 degrees. The Fire District wants to remind residents to be sure to have working smoke detectors, and have a plan for exiting their residence to a place of safety.
