Linseed Oil on used rags is a serious safety concern!

By D/C Timothy Jones
March 25, 2019

In February, the Prospect Heights Fire District responded to a fire in a home under renovation that was possibly caused by old rags used in refinishing wood. We have also received information from a neighboring department where they had 3 fires in recent years. After our neighbors had a recent fire, they partnered with UL to test the theory. Please see the attached time line, a fire can start in 8 hours after leaving oil soaked rags in the trash bin... Please be careful with disposal, dry the rags outside before disposal.
