Using a semi-trailer as a prop, Prospect Heights’ firefighters practiced techniques for controlling and extinguishing fires involving hazardous materials and tanker trailers. Harper College’s Wolf Road campus is the home to a commercial truck driver training program and permitted the PHFD use of the tank trailer. The scenario posed to firefighters was a fire involving the tank trailer and product leaking on the ground. A pumper supplied two fire hoses and each were used to spray water onto the simulated fire. One hose team the moved up and operated the emergency valve to stop the simulated flow of product. Full-scale drills such as these test the knowledge, skills, and abilities of firefighters and allow for improvements. The drills were conducted over six days and more than 36 firefighters.
