Firefighters Practice on Real Fires in Vacant Houses

Prospect Heights firefighters conducted hands-on training using houses scheduled for demolition. The houses at 702, 704, and 706 North Elmhurst Road offered a rare opportunity to practice fire attack skills. Using these houses actual fires were set and firefighters then moved in with hose lines to refine their techniques and improve team work. More than a dozen separate fires were fought in these houses during the week the drills were conducted. “In one week we gain one year of experience” said Fire Chief Gould. “We are able to learn lessons that will translate to improved performance when citizens need us the most.”

The PHFD is always looking for opportunities to use houses scheduled for demolition. Homeowners or developers planning demolition and would like to offer use of the building to the PHFD may contact Deputy Chief Drew Smith at 847-253-8060 extension 223.
