Using a $24,000 Federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant obtained by the Prospect Heights Fire Protection District, Prospect Heights and Wheeling firefighters completed three full days of training combating actual fires using a propane-supplied aircraft simulator. Chicago Executive Airport provided an open space near its hangars on Palatine Road. On August 18, 19, and 20 more than 60 firefighters from the two departments practiced and honed their skills fighting fuel spill and aircraft fires. Hose line and truck-mounted nozzles (turrets) were used. Besides these firefighting skills, simulated rescues were also practiced. The ability to train so many firefighters in these rarely used but essential skills without incurring substantial overtime costs was made possible by the Federal grant. The PHFPD thanks our senators Richard Durbin and Tammy Duckworth as well as our congressional representatives Brad Schneider and Jan Schakowsky for their support of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program over than past two decades.
