Crashes and other incidents involving aircraft are a very real possibility for Prospect Heights and Wheeling firefighters. Over the past two decades both departments have responded to nearly three dozen such incidents on or near Chicago Executive (formerly Palwaukee) Airport. Being prepared for such emergencies is one of the many topics of training and practice annually.

On May 11, 12, and 13 members of the Prospect Heights Fire District and Wheeling Fire Department participated in aircraft familiarization training. Organized by Prospect Heights and conducted by Priester Aviation, several different corporate jet aircraft were toured. Priester Assistant Director of Safety Mike Kotch conducted the tour and training. Six sessions were held (two per day for three days) in order for the more than 70 firefighters to participate.

Anytime there is an aircraft-related emergency, both the Prospect Heights Fire District and Wheeling Fire Department respond and form a Unified Incident Command. This response ensures adequate equipment and personnel for the unique challenges presented by the environment and aircraft which is significant different than the structure fires and roadway transportation incidents faced daily by firefighters.

Chicago Executive Airport is owned jointly by the City of Prospect Heights and the Village of Wheeling.
