| Shortly after 4 am on Friday August 28th an activated smoke detector in the basement alerted the homeowners 2 pet dogs that there was a potential problem. The barking of the dogs woke the 2 residents of a house on Edward Drive. The family did not hear the smoke detector sounding due to a door in the basement area being closed, Upon their investigation, they found a small fire in a basement closet. The husband used a fire extinguisher while the wife called 911 to report the fire. Upon the arrival of the Prospect Heights Fire Department, the fire was indeed extinguished but there was smoke throughout the house. Members used fans to ventilate the house and the family was able to return to the residence.
This family was fortunate because they followed the basic safety rules:
1 Have working smoke detectors on every level of a house
2. Have a fire extinguisher and use it if you feel comfortable doing so.
3. Call 911
A tragedy was adverted in this circumstance because of working smoke detectors on every level of their house. This homeowner even has a system that will send them a text message on their cell phone indicating that a smoke detector is activated. The real heroes were the 2 dogs that alerted the family. |
