Every 3 minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer. Treatment for this disease causes kids hair to fall out and as part of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation the charity recruits volunteers to shave their hands and stand in solidarity with kids with cancer in return for pledges of financial support. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation makes more grants for childhood cancer research than any other organization in the world; the exception being the U.S. government.

On Saturday, March 22, 2014 the Prospect Heights Fire District supported the local St. Baldrick’s Fundraiser, even the Fire Chief, Donald R. Gould Jr. took part in the festivities by donating money and shaving his head for the charity event. The event took place at H.O.M.E. bar and also featured a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and many other prizes to be awarded based on team participation; all helping to raise even more money for the event.

In the past five years the event has raised more than $198,000 and over 400 volunteers have shaved their locks. Last years event raised $61,889. Each year the event honors a child who will benefit from the researching funding and this year the event honored Mia G., age four; Paige C., age three; and Makayla D., age five. All three of these young girls are from Illinois and currently undergoing cancer treatment.
