Have you often wondered why it is so important to have a working CO detector in your house? Well the truth is that enough exposure to carbon monoxide can be deadly. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas which is why it is so important to have a properly functioning CO detector in your house.
CBS’s Chris Martinez put 10 detectors to the test (video above). The problem that occurred with most of the detectors that did not go off is a problem that many times we run into here in Prospect Heights. Residents don’t realize that these devices have a shelf life. Manufacturers only guarantee these devices for 3 to 5 years and another common issue is that the devices batteries are never switched out or the device its self is never tested.
We recommend placing your CO detectors near the floor for early detection as the density of carbon monoxide is the same as air. Proper placing is also important; and should be near your sleeping quarters as well as at least one on every level. It is important not to install detectors near fuel-burning appliances as they do emit a small amount of carbon monoxide upon start-up. A detector should not be placed within fifteen feet of heating or cooking appliances either.
